The Post-MVP Playbook: What Founders Should Do in the First 30 Days After Launch

Your SaaS MVP is live. Now what? Avoid the two fatal post-launch traps, set up essential product analytics, conduct live founder onboarding calls, and turn your first 10 users into paying champions.

You did it. The code is tested, the domain is pointed, the Stripe checkout is connected, and your MVP is live on the internet.

Now you open your analytics dashboard.

Zero visitors.

Panic sets in. Most founders respond to the silence of launch day by falling into one of two fatal traps:

  1. The Ghost Town Freeze: They assume the product has failed, close their laptop, and wonder why the world isn't beating a path to their door.
  2. The Feature Treadmill: They assume the product didn't sell because it was missing dark mode, CSV exports, Zapier integrations, and AI chatbots. They immediately dive back into coding 15 new features that nobody asked for.

Both paths lead to startup death.

The real purpose of an MVP is not to scale automatically on Day 1. The purpose of an MVP is to start a conversation with the market and validate unit economics.

Here is the exact 30-day playbook every founder should follow the moment their software ships.

Days 1–7: Instrumentation & Sanity Checking

Before spending a single dollar on marketing or cold outreach, you must verify that your telemetry and error logging are functioning.

1. Install Session Replay (PostHog or Microsoft Clarity)

Traditional Google Analytics only tells you that 10 people visited /dashboard and left after 20 seconds. It doesn't tell you why.

By installing PostHog or Microsoft Clarity (both have generous free tiers), you can watch video replays of actual user sessions:

  • Did they click a button that looked interactive but wasn't?
  • Did they get confused by an empty state?
  • Did an unhandled error crash their checkout form?

Watching just 10 session recordings will teach you more about your product than 3 months of internal speculation.

2. Configure Sentry Real-Time Error Alerts

Connect Sentry or a Discord/Slack webhook for unhandled exceptions. When an actual customer triggers an unexpected 500 error, you should receive a phone notification within 30 seconds and patch it before they complain on Twitter.

3. Verify End-to-End Conversion in Production

Do not trust test-mode assumptions:

  • Sign up with a real personal Gmail account.
  • Complete a real $1 transaction with your personal credit card.
  • Confirm the welcome email arrives from Resend/SendGrid and doesn't land in Spam.
  • Verify the database marks your account as active.

Days 8–18: The "Do Things That Don't Scale" Phase

Do not run Meta or Google Ads yet. Your conversion funnel is unproven, and paying $15 per click to an uncalibrated landing page will incinerate your capital.

Instead, acquire your first 10 beta users through manual, direct outreach:

[ 15-Minute Zoom Onboarding Call ] ──(Founder watches user click)

The 1-on-1 Onboarding Technique

When someone expresses interest on LinkedIn, X, or Reddit, do not just send them a link and say "check it out!".

Say:

"We just released our v1 for a small cohort of initial users. I'd love to give you free extended access for 6 months and personally set up your account over a 15-minute Zoom call. Does Tuesday at 2 PM work?"

During that call, do not demo the product. Instead, give them the screen-share controls and ask them to accomplish the core task. Watch in silence. When they hesitate, note the friction.

Days 19–25: Triaging the Feedback Matrix

After your first 10 onboarding sessions, you will have a notebook full of user requests.

Junior founders try to build all of them. Senior founders use the MVP Triage Matrix:

| Category | Definition | Action | |---|---|---| | P0: Showstoppers | Data corruption, broken auth, billing failures, inability to complete primary value loop. | 🚨 Fix within 24 hours. | | P1: Friction Polish | Confusing UI copy, ambiguous button labels, missing empty state explanations. | 🛠️ Batch into weekly release. | | P2: Workflow Enhancements | Requests that make the core feature 20% faster for existing power users. | 📝 Backlog for v1.1. | | P3: Novel Feature Requests | "Can you also add an AI CRM and social scheduler?" | 🛑 Politely decline or log to validate if 3+ users ask. |

If a requested feature does not directly support your core value proposition, do not build it. Focus exclusively on removing friction from your primary loop.

Days 26–30: The First Case Study & Social Proof Flywheel

Once 3 to 5 users are actively using your MVP to solve their real problem, lock in your initial social proof.

  1. Ask for a 2-Sentence Quote: Send a simple email: "Hey Sarah, noticed you generated 14 reports this week. Would you mind if I quoted you on our homepage about how much time it saved you?"
  2. Document the Before-and-After: Capture concrete numbers: "Saved 4 hours per week", "Replaced 3 fragmented spreadsheets", "Shipped 2 weeks faster".
  3. Add Quotes to Landing Page: Social proof dramatically increases conversion rates for cold traffic.

The 30-Day Founder Checklist

  • [ ] Week 1: PostHog session replay live; real $1 transaction tested; zero Sentry errors.
  • [ ] Week 2: 10 live Zoom onboarding calls completed; observed user confusion noted.
  • [ ] Week 3: Core friction points patched; P0 bugs eliminated; weekly progress changelog published.
  • [ ] Week 4: First 3 testimonial quotes secured; pricing tiers adjusted based on willingness to pay.
